Mesothelioma - Types and Symptoms
Mesothelioma - Types and Symptoms (Mesothelioma - Part 2)
Professions that can cause Mesothelioma:
Mesothelioma is a deadly disease which also is almost incurable. Employees of many automobile companies, mines, ship-building, mechanics and people working with insulated materials containing asbestos, construction, chemical factories, and asbestos processing companies, and even people staying nearby the factories where asbestos is processed can be exposed to the asbestos dust and other related factors. This exposure - prolonged, or even a short time exposure - can damage the health permanently. This asbestos dust settles in the lungs, heart, intestines, stomach, and other vital and non-vital body cavities and tissues. Over time, this causes cancerous growth in the human tissues. As immediate actions are still not implemented to stop the exposure, thousands of more Mesothelioma cases are bound to surface in the future.
The loved ones and even people who can come into contact with these workers can develop Mesothelioma because the fine asbestos dust that is settled on the clothes, bags, and body, including hair, can find its way to enter these relatives’ and fellow travelers’ vital system.
Types of Mesothelioma
There are three major types of Mesothelioma.
1. Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma affects the lungs and its surrounding tissues. Lungs are affected due to the inhalation of the asbestos dust, which settles in the lungs cavities. This form of Mesothelioma is widely reported, and almost 70% to 75% of the cases noted belong to Pleural Mesothelioma.
Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma:
Some of the symptoms are:
- Pain
- cough which worsens over time
- Breathlessness
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Wheeze
- Infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and other lung diseases
- Cancerous growths
2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma
This is again a common type of Mesothelioma. The asbestos dust also enters the alimentary tract (which is also called the digestive tract). This dangerous dust gets lodged in any part of the very important tract that the digestive tract is. The harmful dust also can pass through the blood stream which nourishes the tract.
Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma:
- Many of the above symptoms are seen along with the following symptoms:
- Weight-loss
- Loss of appetite
- Pain and swelling
- Vomiting
- Obstruction of the bowels
- Blood loss and anemia
- Many other related infections
3. Pericardial Mesothelioma
This is the least common type of Mesothelioma. The pericardium (the sac-like covering of the heart) is affected and the asbestos dust freely enters the blood stream which circulates the body and the heart. The dust also affects the vital heart muscles and tissues. It causes he malfunction of the heart and its muscles.
Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma:
- Any major and minor cardiac and circulation related symptoms can be seen.
- Pain
- Breathlessness
- Anemia
- Cardiac (heart) diseases
- Pericarditis
Why is Mesothelioma so dangerous?
Mesothelioma is a serious and deadly disease. It takes a long time to detect Mesothelioma, which gives the disease sufficient time to spread in different parts of body. Mesothelioma still is considered as incurable. The treatment is almost ineffective. The prognosis is very bad. The social factor of this disease is also harmful as the family members and even other people can be exposed to this harmful disease through the asbestos dust in air, and the employees working in asbestos related companies can carry this harmful dust in their clothes and on their person.
